What Investments Can I Hold in My SIPP?

A Self‑Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) gives you greater control over how your pension is invested, but not every type of investment is allowed.

Alltrust permits a wide range of investments, provided they meet our regulatory and operational requirements. A full and up‑to‑date list of permitted, restricted and unacceptable investments can be found in our Permitted Investments List, available in our Document Library.

Standard Investments (Retail Investors)

Most members invest in standard or mainstream investments, which include (but are not limited to):

  • UK or EEA deposit accounts (withdrawable within 30 days)
  • Quoted shares on a recognised stock exchange (including AIM)
  • Investment trusts, ETFs and REITs
  • Authorised unit trusts and OEICs
  • Insurance company managed funds
  • Government and investment‑grade corporate bonds
  • Investment‑grade gold bullion
  • UK commercial property (subject to approval)
  • Genuinely Diverse Commercial Vehicles (GDVCs)

These investments are typically easier to value, trade and administer.

Additional Investments for Knowledgeable Investors

Some higher‑risk or more complex investments are only accepted where a member has been formally assessed by Alltrust as a Knowledgeable Investor, for example:

  • Unquoted UK equities
  • Property syndicates
  • Hedge funds
  • UK Structured products
  • Unregulated Collective Investment Schemes (UCIS)
  • Secured loans to unconnected companies

Additional due diligence and advice requirements apply.

Investments That Are Not Allowed

Certain investments cannot be held in an Alltrust SIPP, including (but not limited to):

  • Residential property (direct or indirect)
  • Cryptocurrencies (including crypto ETFs)
  • Peer‑to‑peer (P2P) lending
  • Unregulated overseas property
  • Tangible moveable assets (e.g. art, machinery)
  • Loans to individuals or connected parties
  • Solar or wind turbines

If an investment becomes unacceptable due to regulatory change, Alltrust may require it to be sold.

If you have any questions about which investments are permissible, please refer to our Permitted Investments List or contact us on 0330 838 3705.
